What would it feel like to attend a free English lesson taught by a foreign teacher at a primary school in a county town?
Recently, within the classrooms of Siyuan Experimental Primary School in Ledong Li Autonomous County, clear English songs and the laughter of children could be heard. International volunteer educators from various countries took the stage at the school, delivering an immersive English teaching outreach program—a charitable initiative that provided a summer growth gift brimming with an "international flair" to over a hundred local children.
This event, jointly organized by the Organization Department of the Ledong County Party Committee (County Party Committee Talent Development Bureau), the County Communist Youth League Committee, and the County Education Bureau, along with the Haikou International Talent Home, has provided children in the county seat with the opportunity to engage in face-to-face exchanges with international talents right on their doorstep.
Underpinning this public welfare classroom initiative is a highly qualified team of foreign volunteer instructors. Among the six teaching volunteers, three hold doctoral degrees and two hold master's degrees; despite hailing from different countries and professional backgrounds, they all share the same passion for public welfare. The lessons eschew rote memorization; instead, English is ingeniously integrated into song rhythms, game-based challenges, and situational Q&A sessions. By adopting an immersive teaching approach that places children at the center of every activity, the entire classroom is filled with vibrant enthusiasm for participation.

Different teaching styles can yield equally vibrant learning experiences. In an English appreciation class led by Dr. Fu Jihu and Dr. Mo Na, children beat the rhythm and sing classic English songs in unison; their language transforms from rigid words into joyful expressions flowing with the melody, and even the more shy children gradually open up their voices to sing along. Jay, who specializes in engaging teaching for young learners, and Teacher Yu'e together turn the classroom into a "game carnival," where level-based Q&A sessions paired with instant rewards encourage children to raise their hands eagerly, allowing vocabulary and sentence patterns to subtly take root in their minds through play. Dr. Wang Mingqing and Teacher Qin Zhenxi, meanwhile, employ vivid body demonstrations and progressively layered questioning to guide students in echoing and expressing themselves; their class alternates between rhythmic movement and quiet reflection—a dynamic interplay that radiates the vibrant intellectual energy of young learners.
Although the lesson was brief, it planted the seeds of interest in the children's hearts. At the end of the activity, volunteers presented commemorative certificates to each child; the children, holding their certificates, gathered around their teacher for a group photo, expressing their joy with simple, innocent remarks such as "It was so much fun!" and "I want to go again!" The parents, in turn, were delighted to hear their children humming English songs after returning home. The parent of student Mai Qianyi remarked, "Our child now has access to high-quality foreign teacher resources right at their doorstep—this not only broadens their horizons but also builds their confidence."
This public welfare classroom program not only serves as a vivid demonstration of the extension of high-quality educational resources to grassroots levels, but also provides children in county towns with a window to explore the broader world. It is understood that, moving forward, the relevant departments in Ledong will continue to establish international talent exchange platforms, deepen collaborative partnerships, and regularly launch public welfare classes featuring foreign teachers. These efforts will steadily extend high-quality educational resources to local communities, thereby injecting the impetus of international talent to foster the healthy development of young people and advance the economic and social progress of county-level regions.
